You don't need certainty, you need creativity

You don’t need certainty, you need creativity.

Ever found yourself stuck in a rut, unable to see a way out? You know, that feeling when every path seems blocked, and the way forward appears shrouded in uncertainty. You might have thought that certainty was the only lifeline in the chaos, the only beacon in the fog of confusion. But let me tell you: chasing certainty is like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands—a futile and frustrating endeavour that leaves you grasping at thin air, with nothing to show for your efforts.

Here’s the truth: The answer to uncertainty isn’t in the false promises of certainty. Nope, it’s in something far more potent: creativity.

Think back to the last time you hit a roadblock—a problem that seemed impossible to crack. Maybe it was at work, maybe in your personal life. Ever notice how the same old solutions just don’t cut it anymore? That’s because they’re rooted in the past, in what we already know. But creativity? It’s all about breaking free from those old patterns, about seeing things with fresh eyes.

Look at the companies making waves in the business world today. They’re not the ones playing it safe, sticking to the tried and tested methods. No, they’re the ones taking risks, stepping outside the box, and embracing uncertainty with open arms.

And in science? Same thing. Every major breakthrough, from penicillin to space travel, came from someone daring to ask, “What if we tried this crazy idea?” Take the case of Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin. His accidental observation of mould spores killing bacteria in a petri dish led to the development of the first antibiotic. It was a leap of faith, a willingness to embrace uncertainty, that paved the way for one of the greatest medical discoveries of the 20th century.

The lesson here is clear: creativity flourishes in the face of uncertainty. It’s those who are willing to take risks, to explore the unknown, who ultimately reap the rewards. So, the next time you find yourself grappling with uncertainty, don’t shy away from it. Embrace it. Who knows? It might just lead you to your next big breakthrough.

But it’s not just about big ideas and world-changing inventions. It’s about everyday life, too. Maybe you’re facing a tough decision, or perhaps you’re just feeling lost. That’s where creativity comes in. Instead of banging your head against the wall, try something new. Flip a coin, brainstorm twenty different ways to look at the problem—whatever it takes to shake things up.

When I work with leaders or teams to increase creativity and the bottom line, we often hit a snag. The ideas we need often come from embracing uncertainty, and that’s not always easy. But I’ve got some tricks in my creativity toolbox! Sometimes, I’ll ask them to flip a coin to decide our next move. Other times, I challenge them to think of twenty new ideas, stretching beyond their current state.

Creativity thrives on uncertainty. It’s where the magic happens. So, the next time life throws you a curveball, don’t panic. Get creative. That’s where the real answers lie.
